Minutes of the October 3, 2007 Regular Meeting
of the Arlington Lions Club
The October 2, 2007 meeting of the Arlington Lions Club was called to order by Lion President Paul Wiemann at 7:30 p.m. at the Arlington Haus with seven members present.
Treasurer's Report
The treasurer's report was read. It was noted that some reconciliation of expenses for the recent World War II veteran's tour to St. Paul and some dues payments were not reflected in information presented on the October treasurer's report and dues statement. Lion President Paul will contact Lion Treasurer Peter Arneson to account for the differences. The report was approved pending a clarification of these expenses and dues payments.
Secretary's Report
There was a clarification of the definition of the approval requirements for the upcoming vote to determine whether the Arlington Lions Club and the Arlington Sibley East Area Lions Club shall merge. Lion President Paul Wiemann explained that the minutes should reflect that the approval of the merger will require a 2/3 approval margin in both clubs based on the ballots cast, not on club membership numbers.
The minutes were approved with the clarification noted.
Business Items
1. Lion President Paul Wiemann reported to the club on donation approved at the last summer board of director's meeting and inadvertently not reported at the September meeting. In August, the Arlington Lions Club received a donation request from Sibley County Public Health on behalf of a resident of the Arlington Good Samaritan Center. Due to special circumstances, the individual did not qualify for public assistance for said transportation. The board of directors approved a $135 donation to fund this request as the donation was eligible based on our donation guidelines. The membership seemed to feel that this was an excellent decision by the directors.
2. A discussion took place regarding the previously approved boy's elementary school basketball fundraiser for Sight First II. Lion Steve Harter suggested, as reported in an email report read by Lion Hislop, two dates, one in January 2008 and the other in February 2008. Moved by Noack and Seconded by Liebl to proceed with the January 19 date. Unanimously approved.
Lion Lieb asked whether the Senior High Leos could set up their mini donut machine at the tourney. The club had no objection. Lion Liebl will contact Lion Steve Harter to arrange the sale.
3. A discussion took place regarding the Lions Birthday Calendar picture. Lion Hislop reported that the fire department picture would be much better if it actually pictured the firemen rather than just the trucks. Perhaps they would be willing to wait a year to get a proper picture? Lion Thomes reported that the firemen did not want to be pictured, just the equipment and their names. Due to this information, the club decided to proceed with the fire department picture as planned.
4. A discussion took place regarding the Write Off contest. Lion Paul stated that he needed more information on this activity before contacting the high school principal. Lion Hislop reported that there is no information about this contest through normal Lion information online. Lion Mathwig stated that Lion Jim Spille could provide the club with whatever information it needed. Lion Paul will contact Lion Spille.
5. A discussion was held regarding "Incorporation". The club was incorporated in the 1950's but may no longer be incorporated due to a failure to update this status at appropriate times. The club wants to be incorporated to protect individual members from legal action. Moved by Lion Mathwig and seconded by Lion Liebl that Lion Ross Arneson be asked to create and/or file the appropriate paperwork with the state. Lion Hislop stated that he would contact Lion Arneson.
6. Lion Mathwig presented some preliminary information regarding a memorial to Lion Robert Majors in the Veteran's Memorial area of the Hospital Park. Some of the possibilities could run as high as $25,000. A couple of members remarked that it was unlikely that the Majors family donated the money to the club with the expectation of the club using a significant percentage of the donation to memorialize Lion Majors. Lion Mathwig was asked to prepare some specific Veteran's Memorial area proposals with actual dollar amounts. The issue was then tabled pending further information.
7. Lion Paul noted that he, Lion Mathwig, and Lion Hislop attended the recent region meeting in Le Center.
8. A projected date of December 14, 2007, was reported for the upcoming Mexican Haystack feed in connection with a boy's basketball game. The proceeds will hopefully payoff the sound system upgrade project in the junior high. It was reported that the Gaylord Sertoma Club may also be working to fund this project. The membership felt our project should proceed regardless. (update! Lion Steve Harter reports that Sertoma is working to fund sound system equipment in classrooms in order to aid hearing impaired students and this work is not related to the gym sound system project)
9. The club visit will be in January to the Hamburg Lions. More information to follow.
10. Green Isle will be visiting our club in November.
11. The District Governor will visit us in either December of January. More information to follow.
Respectfully Submitted,
Lion Dan Hislop
