Minutes of the November 7, 2007 Regular Meeting
Of the
Arlington Lions Club
The meeting was called to order by Lion President Paul Wiemann at 7:00 p.m. at the Arlington Haus with seven Arlington Lions and 21 Green Isle Lions present.
The secretary’s report of the October 3, 2007 regular meeting was approved as read.
Lion Treasurer Arneson was absent and no treasurer’s report was available.
Old Business
1. Lion Steve Harter updated the club on the first annual Hot Shots Basketball Tourney to be held at the Arlington School on January 19, 2008. Lion Harter reported that 44 mailings were sent out. We intend to field eight teams, first come, first serve. The gym has been reserved. All members will be needed on January 19. Coach Warzecha will be providing referees, etc. The project may net close to $2,000.
A discussion took place regarding the SEA Lions and their participation in the event. It was suggested that the SEA Lions be asked to assist due to the need for workers and the pending merger of the memberships. Moved by Hislop and seconded by Liebl to ask the SEA Lions to assist with proceeds to be split between the two clubs. Unanimously approved.
Proceeds for the Arlington Lions are designated for the Sight First II campaign. It is believed the SEA Lions have not yet designated funds for the campaign and may elect to donate their proceeds to Sight First II as well.
2. Lion Darwin Mathwig had no additional information on the Robert Major memorial other
than to mention that he is looking at less costly alternatives than the one presented at the October meeting.
3. Lion Hislop reported that he will be visiting with school staff regarding the December 14, 2007 Mexican Haystack Dinner with proceeds designated to pay off the sound system project at the junior high. Lion Nancy Hislop and Lion Bev Breyer of the SEA Lions and Lion Steve Harter will form a planning committee.
4. Green Isle PDG Maynard Rucks was asked to present information on this year’s Write Off contest. There have been five submissions from Sibley East High School students. These essays will be judged with entries from N-YA and LeSueur-Henderson. Our contribution toward awards will be $75. Motion by Liebl, seconded by Noack to make the contribution. Motion passed unanimously.
5. A merger update was given. The District unanimously approved the merger of the Arlington Lions Club and the Arlington Sibley East Lions Club. The next step is a January meeting to take care of housekeeping details such as meeting nights, etc.
6. A lengthy discussion of the Lions Track Meet took place with the attending Green Isle Lions Club members. The Green Isle Lions said they would attempt to meet their obligation to provide workers but there must be better communication from the Arlington Lions which means earlier notification than in the past. Lion President Paul and Rita will make sure this happens.
7. Lion Secretary Hislop reported that he had researched our incorporation status and found the appropriate records on the state website. The necessary forms to make the incorporation active rather than the present status of inactive have been downloaded, completed, and mailed to the Minnesota Secretary of State.
New Business
1. Lion Paul led a discussion regarding Santa’s Helpers. The club will work on Tuesday, December 4 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the American Lutheran Church in Gaylord. Lion Richard Thomes will set up donation drops in Arlington. Moved by Mathwig and seconded by Harter to donate $250 to Santa’s Helpers. Unanimously approved.
2. A donation request was received from the Girl Scouts of Minnesota and Wisconsin River Valleys. This is a realignment of the Peacepipe Council which has served Arlington girls for many years. Lion Treasurer Arneson has been asked to prepare a list of recurring donations such as for the scouts. Such a list would be invaluable in keeping track of the amount and timing of such donations. The Girl Scout donation request was tabled pending the development of the donation list.
3. A donation request was received for the American Diabetes Ass’n Camp Needlepoint. Green Isle Lion members reported that the camp does excellent work and supports local children with diabetes. They have contributed to the organization for many years. The request was tabled until the December meeting.
4. Members were reminded of the upcoming SEA Lions Wine and Beer Tasting event on November 9. Tickets are available and help setting up would be appreciated from 4-5 p.m.
5. Lion Darwin will be attending the Midwinter Convention in Mankato in February. Any other members interested in attending should contact Lion President Paul Wiemann.
6. A donation request was received from media center specialist Amy Lorenz from the Arlington Campus of the Sibley East Schools. The request was for funding of books for the Arlington Sibley East School library through the Scholastic Book Fair. Donations are matched by Scholastic and distributed to three organizations. It was unclear whether the Sibley East Schools will benefit from the matching funds. Moved by Harter and seconded by Hislop to donate $100 to purchase books for the Arlington Sibley East Campus Library. Unanimously approved.
7. Lion Hislop reported to the two clubs in attendance that the Leos are out of large T-Shirts which are used to acknowledge service hours. Moved by Noack and seconded by Mathwig to proceed with the shirt order up to 15 shirts with costs to be shared by the other two clubs. The information will taken back the next Green Isle Lions meeting. Unanimously approved.
8. Lion Mike Noack noted that the fire hall restoration project is nearing its final stages with the financial goal not being met but within sight of the goal. He suggested that it would be an ideal time to make another contribution to this project. It was noted that the club’s original donation may have been a bit light. The request was tabled pending information on our original donation and the amount needed by the committee.
